Welcome to CUTwC

The Cambridge University Tiddlywinks Club exists to promote the game of Tiddlywinks in the University and the world, to beat Oxford once a year in the Varsity Match, and to gently poke fun at people who think that sport is serious.

In 1955 a group of Cambridge undergraduates invented the modern game of winks. It's based on the children's game that you probably remember, but those first Cambridge winkers added rules to turn it into a game which requires a combination of the physical skills of snooker or croquet with the tactics of chess. Don't believe me? Clicky to find out what the game is like.

Better still, come along to the next club meeting. Meetings happen every Wednesday during Full Term, at 8pm in the Tower Room, Selwyn College. Special events will be announced here.

Also, don't miss out on the regular Pub Crawl of Cambridge.

Members of the club can sign up to the mailing list.

Latest Announcements

Royal Match - Saturday 1st March

This coming Saturday, there will be a Royal Match to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the original Royal Match played against The Goons.

A select band of CUTwC players will be taking on HRH Prince Philip's Royal Champions - the Savage Club. Members of the original 1958 CUTwC team are expected to be in attendance, including the Club's founder, Bill Steen.

The festivities kick off at 11:30 am in the Old Library, Emmanuel College.
Reply from Sarah:
Hoorah! CUTwC won the Royal Match 24-18, after early losses and a tense final round. Congratulations to the team and thanks to everyone who helped organise the day.

Meetings in Lent Term

Winks meetings this term will be taking place in The Walters Room, Selwyn College on Tuesdays at 8pm. (The Walters Room is on the ground floor of C staircase in Old Court - turn left out of the P'lodge.) The first meeting of term will be on January 22nd.

Squashy Freshers

It's that time of year again! The Freshers' Squash will be taking place from 7.30pm on Monday 8th in Pembroke, Room N7.

New Committee

A brand new committee was elected at the AGM:

President: David Beckett (Pembroke)
Secretary: Andrew Blackburn (Homerton)
Junior Treasurer: Cassia Pennington (Selwyn)
Assistant Secretary: Fran Kelly (Selwyn)
Publicity Officer: Sarah Knight (Selwyn)

Dr Sage remains as Senior Treasurer.

Annual General Meeting - Wednesday 9th May

The AGM will take place at 7.30pm on Wednesday 9th May in the Castle Inn, Castle Street. Anyone wishing to stand for election to the Committee should get in touch with the President immediately if they have not already done so. Committee posts are as follows: President, Secretary, Junior Treasurer, Publicity Officer and Assistant Secretary.

Beer and Cribbage

There will be a CUTwC deputation to the Hitchin Beer Festival on Saturday 24th March, probably on the 12.28 out of Cambridge.

The next day, 25th March, will see the Annual Cribbage Tournament, for which gather for lunch at the Hat and Feathers at round about 12. The tournament will be played after lunch, and will no doubt be followed by a pub crawl, and Bo-Bo crawling through a wendyhouse.

Cribbage Result:

Dr Fayers has won again. At least that made his trip across the Atlantic worth while.

CUTwC vs. Bridge Club Cricket

After some considerable delay, and various failed attempts to elicit the exact score from the participants, the President can announce that CUTwC did in fact beat the Bridge Club in the Traditional cricket match held on 19th June 2006. Special mention must go to Dr Barrrie's bowling and the rather talented ringer we somehow picked up on Jesus Green.

Freshers' Squash

The Squash will be taking place from 8pm on Wednesday 11th October in Selwyn's Tower Room. Everyone welcome - free punch for all!

Change of Time and Venue for Meetings

Meetings will now take place at 8pm on Wednesdays in the Tower Room, Selwyn College. (That's on the first floor of the Gate Tower.)

CUTwC vs CTS Croquet

On Wednesday CUTwC defeated the Cambridge Tolkien Society 2-0 in the annual May Week croquet match. We then introduced them to SEPTIC Hold 'Em in the Red Bull.
